The ideal time to visit Peru largely depends on the region you plan to explore and the type of activities you want to enjoy, with weather playing a crucial role. Generally, the dry season from May to September is considered the best time for visiting the Andes and Machu Picchu, as clear skies and minimal rainfall create optimal trekking and sightseeing conditions. Coastal areas, including Lima, experience mild and sunny weather during the Southern Hemisphere’s winter (June to August), making it suitable for beach visits and city tours. Meanwhile, the Amazon rainforest region sees less rain between July and October, offering better chances for wildlife spotting and jungle excursions. Travelers should prepare for temperature variations, warm days and cool nights in the highlands and more consistent tropical climates in the rainforest. Monitoring seasonal weather patterns helps ensure a comfortable and enjoyable travel experience in Peru.
Lima has a mild desert climate with little rainfall. Summers (December to April) are warm, while winters (May to November) are cooler and overcast.
Arequipa has a mild climate with sunny days year-round. Temperatures range from 10°C to 25°C, with little rainfall.
Cusco experiences a dry season (May to September) with sunny days and cold nights, and a wet season (October to April) with frequent rain showers.
The Amazon Rainforest has a tropical climate with high humidity and temperatures ranging from 25°C to 30°C year-round. The wet season is from November to April.
Puno has a classic high-altitude Altiplano weather pattern rather than a coastal one. Because it sits at roughly 3,825 metres above sea level, it stays cool all year, with mild days, cold nights, and a big day–night temperature swing. The main seasonal split is wet season from about December to March and dry season from about May to August, with April usually acting as a transition month. Typical temperatures are often around 12–16°C by day, while winter nights can fall to around freezing or below.
