Piura Region
Stretching across Peru’s far north, Piura is a region of sun-drenched beaches, desert landscapes, fertile valleys and strong cultural traditions. Best known for the relaxed coastal towns of Máncora and Los Órganos, the region also rewards travellers who venture beyond the shoreline, with traditional craft villages, distinctive northern cuisine and a landscape that gradually rises towards the Andean highlands.
Piura’s coastline contains some of Peru’s best-known beaches, from the lively resort town of Máncora to the quieter shores of Las Pocitas, Vichayito, Los Órganos, Cabo Blanco and Lobitos. Warm weather, surfing and a relaxed atmosphere have made this stretch of coast one of the country’s most popular destinations for travellers looking for a few days beside the Pacific.
Yet Piura is much more than its beaches. Inland, the landscape changes to dry forest, agricultural valleys and eventually the mountains of northern Peru. The region includes destinations as varied as Sechura, with its desert and coastal scenery, and the highland provinces of Ayabaca and Huancabamba, home to archaeological sites, traditional communities and the famous Las Huaringas lagoons.
Close to Piura city, Catacaos is one of the region’s most important centres of traditional culture. Its artisans are particularly known for fine filigree jewellery and other crafts, while nearby Narihualá provides a glimpse into the region’s pre-Hispanic past.
Food is another important part of experiencing Piura. The region’s coastal location and agricultural traditions produce a distinctive northern cuisine, with ceviche alongside local dishes such as seco de chavelo and majado de yuca. Seafood is naturally a highlight along the coast.
Whether you come for the surf and sunshine of Máncora, the artisan traditions of Catacaos or simply to explore a warmer and less familiar side of Peru, Piura has a character quite different from the country’s better-known southern destinations.
It is a region that combines easy-going coastal life with history, food and landscapes that stretch from the Pacific towards the Andes, and a wonderful introduction to Peru’s distinctive north.
